The Trade Commissar took her place on the podium outside the Tipsy Turtle Inn, and her hirelings forced a hush upon the raucous crowd of drunks, outlaws, and mercenaries who had gathered for the traditional opening day ceremonies of Tavern Brawls.
Always one for pomp, she raised her gloved fist and spoke with authority, “Citizens of Thandar, I welcome you to the beginning of this proud contest, where twelve teams of brave heroes rise to the occasion and battle for supremacy. Previously, these games of skill have been solely administered by the management team at the Inn. However, in light of the infestation of criminals into the Brawls these past two seasons, I have volunteered to be the special administrator of the expanded Tavern Brawl league. With my guidance and the capable hands of the beloved BrawlMaster, I can guarantee that there will be no more illegal activities to contend with.”
She motioned behind the stage to summon the aforementioned BrawlMaster. When he did not appear, Gerard, the barkeep-in-training, looked on in awkward silence, displeasing the Commissar and her personal guards, the Monaghan Brothers. Caught unawares by this callout of his missing big boss, Gerard attempted to stand and find the BrawlMaster. Without warning, one of her guardsmen violently shoved Gerard back to his seat, ceasing any further interruptions or potential distractions. Not willing to let the absence of the BrawlMaster himself dissuade her, the Commissar turned dramatically back to the crowd and, with a flip of her purple velvet cape, refocused and continued her speech, “So we welcome twelve teams to the competition: The Forestmen, Stoned Alchemists, The Unlucky Bunch, Heroes of the Damned, Hero Cool, Nicecros, Mid Tier Gods, Guess Congress, The Decepticons, Fellowship of the Bling, Knights of the Misty Ale, and Tropic Thandar. Whether the team is new or old, know that the eyes of Thandar are upon you, and any illicit activity will be stomped out.”
Two roguish onlookers looked on with glee as they listened to the Commissar’s words. Previously, they had both earned a healthy profit running a gambling ring at the Tipsy Turtle Inn in prior seasons, taking wagers on the individual and team results of the Brawls. But there came a day when they both crossed the Commissar and were forced to go underground. Arwen smiled and then spoke, “The stars are aligned for us; we have an alliance with the BrawlMaster and the Trade Commissar. Since we received a Royal Pardon for rescuing the Commissar from an assassination attempt, it won’t be long before we get our due from the Syndicate, now that we both have favored status. This season of Tavern Brawls, the real winners will be the two of us; we can rebuild the smuggling ring and make a financial killing off the bruised backs of the Brawlers with our gambling network. The wise Abacus looked over at his friend Arwen and whispered, “Soon, we will own this town, just wait, my friend.”
