“You know, Arwen. I think this Tavern Brawl tournament could end up being a much bigger deal than that old sot of a barkeeper even dreams of. I mean it’s the best warriors of the city going up against each other every week. I think there might be real money to be had here.” Abacus looked to his old friend and rolled a coin between his dirty fingers – lost in thought for a moment. “If only we could find the right angle.”
Arwen stopped filing on the dice he had been working on for the last hour and looked up. Abacus had an affinity for this sort of thing and it usually paid off to listen. “What are you thinking?”
“I’m not sure. We already agreed that we would be taking bets from spectators, but… What if we brought the bets to the entire city? If we could somehow get people interested, even if they are not there for the tournament days? We could take bets from the entire city.” A wrinkle of concentration formed between his brows while he thought, but whatever idea was gnawing at him didn’t seem to want to reveal itself.
“We…” Arwen cleared his throat and continued when Abacus finally looked up. “We could write up the events of the tournament and distribute them around the city? It might generate enough interest that people would be looking to put money on their favorite mercenaries?”
Let’s review the week 1 results, highlights and profile of the professional teams of mercenaries that are vying for the Brawl title. After one week of battles, it looks like the mysterious band of mercs known only as “The Hand” has taken the lead, with 4 of their 5 brawlers logging wins. Not far behind this team of legendary brawlers are two other dangerous teams, the “Heroes of the Damned” and “Blood, Sweat, and Beers” are tied for 2nd place with each team collecting 3 wins apiece. There is a tie for third place between the heavy hitting “Jawbreakers” and “The Smugglers”. Fun fact, “The Smugglers” team is comprised of actual members of the local smuggling ring that operate along the outer belt of Thandar proper. And rounding out the teams of competitors, in last place is “Drink, Smash, Repeat”. And while “DSR” only logged a single battle victory, their team is particularly famous for the rough street fighting style that they use.
Fun fact, it seems DSR’s wizard is a particularly dangerous combatant. Zerbex thoroughly thrashed “The Hand’s” wizard, the Battle Mage Charon in a strong 2-0 victory in what turned out to be The Hand’s only loss in week one. Overall in the league, it seems the wizard class is the one to watch in the tournament. Three out of the six mercenary teams are led by wizards and the wizards are the class with the highest winning percentage.
Week one is complete for certain. But anyone who wagers against the mages is going to have their purse depleted by more than a few gold pieces. We’ll have to see who will rise to the challenge in the weeks ahead or if the ‘glass canons’ will continue their hot streaks of Flame Bursts and Fireballs…
